Today we can announce details of our 2012 conference and a new location in central Tokyo. The event, themed Where Art Meets Science, will take place in the brand new Hikarie Tower complex in Shibuya on June 30th.

“It’s an exciting time for TEDxTokyo and Japan as a whole,” says co-founder Patrick Newell. “The conference is becoming well-known in Japan as a catalyst for innovation, creativity, idea sharing and collaboration. 2012 is a turning point for Japan and TEDxTokyo has the potential to reach and inspire the country to creatively move forward.”

It’s fitting therefore that the 2012 event will take place in Hikarie Hall, part of the new tower complex set to open at the end of April. The result of collaboration with Tokyu Group, it also inspired this year’s theme – “Shibuya has always been a melting pot of youth and innovation,” says Todd Porter, co-founder and TEDx Ambassador. “Artists, technologists and entrepreneurs inspiring each other. It’s this cross-roads where the really great ideas come from.”

Shibuya Hikarie tower is a key part of a much bigger project to upgrade the area’s infrastructure and further stimulate its creative output. As part of this effort, the group will be providing TEDxTokyo with a year-round base within the building. Says Todd, “We’ll use the space to meet and audition potential speakers throughout the year, hold TEDxTokyo salons when international presenters and TEDx organizers visit Tokyo, and support community building, mentoring, and collaboration among our growing ecosystem of TEDx teams throughout Japan.”

TEDxTokyo 2012 is building on last year’s successful event where 33 presenters took to the stage in front of a live audience of 350 participants with a staggering 50,000 virtual viewers joining online, clocking up almost 100,000 views of the three live video streams (including simultaneous interpretation in English and Japanese). We also received over 5,000 comments and questions for speakers via Twitter, and within hours of the final curtain coming down our stellar technical crew had posted all 60 videos on YouTube.

今回で第４回目となるTEDxTokyo 2012が6月30日(土)に開催されることが決定いたしました。

「Where Art Meets Science」をテーマに、今回は会場を渋谷へと移し、東急グループが東急渋谷駅上に4月開業する新施設「渋谷・ヒカリエ」内のイベントホール、「ヒカリエホール」での開催となります。

開催にあたり、創設者の１人であるパトリック・ニューウェル(Patrick Newell)は、「本イベントは、革新と創造性、アイデアの共有とコラボレーションを触発する場として、日本でも知られるようになってきました。2012年は日本とTEDxTokyo の創造性をさらに前進させることで、新たな可能性へ到達する転機となり、全ての参加者にとって刺激的な機会になるでしょう」とコメントしています。

会場の「渋谷・ヒカリエ」は、渋谷の新しいランドマークとして4月末にオープンを予定しています。渋谷が常に若さと創造性の融合する場所であること。そして、本イベントの内容が、開発者の東急グループが掲げる「新しい価値を創造し、発信していくプラットフォームとなること」というテーマにふさわしいことから、「ヒカリエホール」のオープン記念プログラムの一つに加えられることとなりました。

TEDxTokyo のもう１人の創設者であるトッド・ポーター(Todd Porter)は、今回の開催地について、「アーティストや技術者、起業家といった様々な人達が、お互いに出会い、刺激しあうことで、本当に素晴らしいアイデアが生まれる場所になっていくでしょう」とコメントしています。

会場となる東急グループの「渋谷・ヒカリエ」とTEDxTokyo は、今後とも継続的なパートナー関係を築き、TEDxTokyo のプロジェクトを進める重要拠点としていくことを予定しています。Tod Porterは今後のビジョンとして、「私たちはこの場を、年間を通じて潜在的なスピーカーを選出するためや、関係者の交流サロンとして、また、様々なゲストを招いたり、パートナーとの打ち合わせを行うなど、様々な共同作業の場として、関係する人達と共に成長するための拠点にしたいと考えています」とコメントしています。

TEDxTokyo 2012は、昨年成功したTEDxTokyo 2011の開催内容をベースにしつつ、より刺激的でパワフルなプログラムにすることを目指しています。昨年5月に開催されたTEDxTokyo 2011は、33名のスピーカーが350人の招待客の前で講演を行い、日英同時通訳付きで3回線を利用したライブストリーミング中継の視聴者を合わせると、全体で10万人以上が参加するという大成功を収めました。TEDxTokyo のYouTubeチャンネルには、ツイッターなどで寄せられた5千件以上の質問やコメントへの回答を含む、60件のビデオが掲載されており、現在もたくさんの人達に視聴されています。
